1.
I have an electrostatic air filter already
installed. Is it OK to install an in-duct air
purifier?
An
electrostatic air filter will not alter the
performance of an in-duct air purification system.
Electrostatic air filters are a polypropylene media
charged with static electricity. As air moves
through the polypropylene, this static charge
increases to attract and trap particles. Any type of
filter you have on your ventilating system is
appropriate for use with Biozone InDuct Air
Purifiers.
2.
How long does the uv bulb last in an in-duct unit?
How much does it cost to replace it and is it hard
to do?
The
ultraviolet lamp or bulb is rated for 9,000 hours,
or approximately 15 months of continuous use. Replacement
bulbs are under $36 for most units. To replace
the bulb, simply cut the power to the unit, unscrew
the unit from the duct, remove the old lamp, and
insert the new one. The bulb fits into the unit with
a 4-pin relay assembly.
3.
Are these large units? I'm afraid it won't fit in my
ductwork.
These
units are about the size of a cell phone or cordless
phone with a bulb ranging in length from 6 to 12
inches. The 1500, our smallest unit, fits easily
into even the smallest ductwork.
4.
Do these units have a fan? How do they purify my
air?
The
in-duct units do not have a fan because they utilize
the fan or air exchange unit in your existing HVAC
system. This means the unit is less expensive to
operate than a stand-alone unit with a fan,
and has no fan motor to burn out and require
replacement. They purify by killing bacteria and
viruses as they enter your HVAC system and pass over
the uv lamp, and air coming out of your system will
have low levels of ozone and negative ions which
oxidize airborne particulates, eliminate odors, and
break down other unhealthy fumes and organic
contaminants.
5.
Will I still have to have my ducts cleaned if I
install an in-duct air purifier?
Most
people have their ductwork cleaned because mold and
mildew have begun to thrive in them and have begun
to create irritation or illness. Because the Biozone
In-Duct Air
Purifier kills bacteria, mold, and mildew, your
ducts will be exceptionally free of troublesome
molds and mildew. The bacteria and viruses that
proliferate during the cold and flu season won't be
spread througout your entire home or office, keeping
everyone healthier.
Dust
and other particulate matter not oxidized by the
purifying hydroxyls will settle in your ducts.
However, this is normal to a large extent and this
particulate matter will not be as likely to become
airborne and go back into your air because the
photoionization process makes the molecules too
heavy to do so.
6.
Is there any kind of a filter on these in-duct
units?
No.
Because particles such as dust and smoke are
electrically charged with photoelectrons, they are
destroyed and not simply filtered out of the air.
When oxygen atoms are combined with hydrogen atoms
in the air after entering your ducts, purifying
hydroxyls are formed which oxidize harmful organic
contaminants
7.
What are the advantages of an in-duct air purifier
over a portable (countertop) air purifier?
Because
an in-duct air purifier utilizes the existing
ductwork of your house or office building, all
indoor spaces served by that system are purified.
While a Biozone stand-alone
or portable unit circulates powerful purifying
agents throughout the indoor environment and can
purify a fairly large radius around the unit, in
order for air to be purified with the unit's
germicidal uv light it has to actually enter the
unit. In most cases this works very well. However,
if you DO have central heating and air conditioning,
take advantage of the air circulation provided by an
in-duct unit.
Air
conditioning also strips negative ions from the air
and introduces other undesirable elements to the
cooled air. A Biozone in-duct
unit will replace those lost, beneficial negative
ions and eliminate any unhealthy elements produced
by the AC unit.
An
in-duct unit also provides an exceptionally uniform
distribution of ion and ozone throughout the indoor
environment, equally purifying all areas so your
whole home smells fresh and clean. Plus, there's no
unit to dust or accidentally turn off. An in-duct
unit works invisibly and silently and installs in
just minutes. Just insert the unit into the
ductwork, hard-wire it to the circulating fan/air
handler, and that's it. All units now come with a
plug so you can test the unit before doing the
wiring.
8. How
do the in-duct air purifiers work?
These
units use the same exclusive
technology featured by all of the air
purification systems in the Biozone product
line. They use a patented, high-purity UV lamp and
the science of photochemistry to produce a unique
gas plasma comprised of low-level photolic ozone,
negative ions, and purifying hydroxyls. The UV light
effectively kills germs, viruses, bacteria, and
molds and mildews in the ductwork, and the other
purifying agents go to work seeking out and
destroying contaminants in the air everywhere in
your home that is served by your HVAC system.
9. How
do you install the units? Do I need an HVAC
installer or can I do it myself?
While
we do recommend that you have the unit
professionally installed (a reputable HVAC
technician will do it for a reasonable fee), it is
possible to do the job yourself provided you have a
very good understanding of electrical wiring. They're
relatively easy to install - usually less than 30
minutes for each unit. You simply drill a hole in
the ducting about the size of a silver dollar. Then
you insert the lamp in the hole and attach the black
transformer box to the duct with the two sheet metal
screws provided. Then you either hard wire it
to the blower motor or other circulating fan
directly (recommended) or plug it into a 110 wall
socket. That's it. To replace the bulbs each
year you simply unscrew the two screws and unplug
the old lamp and plug in a new one. View
the installation diagram.
10. What
if I have technical questions?
Biozone
has a toll free tech services line set up for all
your technical application questions: 888-822-9945.
Technicians are available Monday through Friday, 8
AM - 5 PM.
11. How
do I know if the UV lamp is still working after it
is installed?
The
Biozone In-Duct Air Purifiers have a light rod which
allows you to safely see if the UV bulb is lighting.
For maximum performance and for warranty validation,
the UV lamp must be replaced annually.
